Steven Knapp, President, George Washington University

Welcome to The George Washington University. I am honored and humbled to be the 16th president of GW, a university with a rich heritage and a bright future. George Washington long ago dreamt of a university that would draw students to the nation’s capital, a community of scholars in which they would forge a shared identity and become the citizen-leaders of a new democracy. Today that dream is a reality in the university that proudly bears his name, a university that also welcomes the citizens and future leaders of nations around the world.

GW is the intellectual center of an international city. Our exemplary faculty is working to deepen and expand our research efforts across the entire range of academic disciplines. Our academic community flourishes because of our partnerships with organizations and entities in this great city and beyond. Our students benefit from their experiences in and out of the classroom and have helped our university gain the distinction of being one of the most active issue- and service-oriented campuses in the country.

As the largest institution of higher education in the nation’s capital, GW offers an array of undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and professional degree programs in medicine, public health, law, engineering, education, business, and international affairs. Ours is a diverse population with widely ranging interests and talents but with shared ideals of academic freedom and excellence, and a shared purpose of service to the nation and the world.

At GW, we also are proud of our legacy—the alumni carry with them the knowledge, ideals, and experience they have made their own. And we hope to engage them as we develop an ever stronger sense of GW as a lifelong and worldwide community.
